New IWC Portugieser watches for the year 2024
Another Watches and Wonders luxury watch fair in Geneva has ended, where novelties for 2024 were presented. Besides conferences and news from the watchmaking industry led by leaders in this field over six days, the focus was naturally on what new things brands like Patek Philippe, IWC Schaffhausen, Panerai, and others would present. Our attention was drawn to the modified and upgraded IWC Portugieser models, which we will discuss below. The new watches have two curved sapphire crystal glasses, one providing a view of the mechanism, and the other an unobstructed view of the new sunburst dial colors - Horizon Blue, Obsidian, and Dune. Portugieser Automatic 42 and 40 still share much with the first Portugieser models dating back to 1939. The idea of creating a wristwatch with the precision of a marine chronometer has proven timeless, as evidenced by the popularity of these models. Each generation of the Portugieser also has common characteristics, such as a minimalist case shape paired with a simple dial that is very striking due to the absence of a bezel. Additionally, each Automatic 42” model has subdials for power reserve display at the three o’clock position and a seconds dial at nine o’clock, while Automatic 40” models have a seconds hand at six o’clock.
Thinner case and new dial colors - IWC Portugieser Automatic 42
Originally introduced in 2000, the new IWC Portugieser Automatic 42 models come in a wide range of colors and materials with a significant change – a thinner watch case. The old case measuring 42.3 x 14.1mm has been replaced by a new version sized 42.4 x 13 mm, which, besides dimensions, also brings a change in water resistance, increased from the original 3 to 5 ATM. Instead of the previous 52010 movement, the watches now house the upgraded 52011, which offers increased resistance to magnetic fields to ensure the most precise time measurement. The new automatic movement retains an impressive 7-day power reserve. Along with technical changes in the heart of the watch, the new IWC Portugieser 42 offers a view of the mechanism through the case back covered with sapphire glass.

The new collection features four models with cases made of stainless steel and three different dial colors. For the new Dune color (IW501705), IWC said it "reflects the mood in the hours when the sun is about to set and night begins," and it is a beige color with gold hands and markers. Besides the Dune color, the new collection includes dials in silver (IW501701, IW501702) and dark blue variants (IW501704). Also presented are watches with cases made of 18-carat white gold with the so-called Horizon Blue dial color (IW501708) and a version with a case made of red gold with an Obsidian black dial (IW501707).

IWC Portugieser Automatic 40
The original Portugieser Automatic 40 was created in 2020 and is a smaller and thinner version of the 42 model, whose appearance resembles the first Portugieser. There have been no changes in the movement, unlike the larger models, and the case still houses the Pellaton automatic winding system, which achieves a 60-hour power reserve. However, there are two new variations on the already proven theme regarding the appearance of the Portugieser 40. A version with a white gold case and Horizon Blue dial (IW358402) was introduced, as well as another version with a red gold case and Obsidian Black dial color (IW358401). It is important to note that the Portugieser models - Automatic 40, Automatic 42, and Chronograph with Horizon Blue dials and white gold cases are part of a limited collection.

IWC Portugieser Chronograph
The Portugieser Chronograph has been part of the collection since 1988 and is one of the most popular IWC models. The design is minimalist, timeless, and characteristic of the brand, and the blend of classic elegance and sporty charm simply always works well. It is recognizable by the vertically arranged subdials at 12 and 6 o’clock. This year, there are no novelties regarding the case size. The Portugieser Chronograph retains its proven dimensions of 41 x 13.1 mm, and the same applies to the movement - the automatic chronograph caliber 69355. The IW371626 model comes with a "Horizon Blue" dial combined with an 18-carat white gold case and a blue calfskin strap. The dial color is inspired by "the early afternoon sky when the sun bathes everything in bright light." IW371625 comes with a red gold case and a lacquered Obsidian Black dial. The third presented model, made of stainless steel - IW371624, has a Dune-colored dial paired with gold-plated hands.
